The New England Patriots have one of the best coaching staffs in the league. It includes Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels, and Matt Patricia. McDaniels and Patricia have become a hot commodity over the past couple seasons, they've been mentioned in many, then vacant, head coaching positions.
McDaniels opted not to interview for any job during this past season's playoffs because he wanted to stay focused. Which was a decision I loved because he is giving all he has at the job he has now. By the time the Patriots had lost in the playoffs, if not all, than most of the jobs had been filled. So he stays another year. But with all the coaches on the hot seat this season he will get an offer for an interview this January. Even if decides to wait until the Pats are done, he should get an interview. Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Buffalo, San Diego, Detroit, and Tennessee all have coaches on the presumed hot seat entering this year.
McDaniels should easily be a candidate for each and every one of those jobs. Don't sleep on Matt Patricia getting interviews either. Patricia decided to take an interview with Cleveland in January while McDaniels did not.
Clearly he didn't get the job because he is still the defensive coordinator this year.
Him not getting the job doesn't mean that he isn't capable of being a head coach. In my opinion he is the best candidate on the market. When was the last time a defensive coordinator got hired to be a head coach? Mike Zimmer? Todd Bowles? Zimmer has been excellent. Patricia deserves a shot. He isn't the household name you want to sign so your casual fans know who it is.
McDaniels has already had his shot at being a head coach and it did not go well. He did not last long in Denver. He is ready for another shot. especially after more grooming from Bill.
Detroit and Tennessee both have Patriot ties and could strongly push for one of them if their job happens to open up. The guys running the show for those teams both worked in New England a short time ago.
If I could pick a landing spot for Patricia it'd be Detroit, reunite him with Bob Quinn. Detroit is going to be terrible again so Caldwell should be done there. For McDaniels I'd put him in Jacksonville or Tennessee. I want McDaniels to go to a place with an up and coming QB. Somewhere he can build something special. Those are two places where he can build something with a rising QB.
In my opinion, they both will be gone at the end of the year. The Patriots were lucky to have their run with these two. Brian Daboll and Brian Flores' time is coming as the next wave of coordinators.
