Here in puck talk I would like to make it explicitly clear that I talk mainly Bruins hockey. But since the season is pretty far off (October 12th) I figured we could write about some throwback Bruins to pass the time.
Let's all hop in our time machines and go back to 2011. The Boston Bruins are coming off a historically horrible playoff run where they managed to lose 4 straight games to the Flyers, including a game 7 loss in which we held a 3-0 lead. But I'm not writing about that. I want to talk about the miraculous playoff run by a 36 year old Tim Thomas.
Tim Thomas was and still is pretty much a psychopath. But! He could keep the puck out of the net that year. In the regular season he had a .938 save percentage and an on the dot 2.00 GAA. Good enough stats to win the Vezina the very same year. He saved his best stuff for last though.
Through 25 games in the playoffs (yes 25, that's 3 game 7's and a sweep) he averaged a .940 save percentage and a GAA of 1.98! Both were improvements over his already award winning regular season. He had so many memorable moments such as the paddle save on Steve Downie in game 7 and the stunning game 2 against Philly where he made 52 saves.
With the current Bruins taking a minor retooling it's refreshing to look back at the good old days when our old man goalie could shock the world. Thanks for reading!
