The 49'ers are coming off of a disaster of a 5-11 season, where Jim Tomsula was fired after. They brought in the recently fired from the Eagles Chip Kelly. They drafted DeForest Buckner in the first round, who is going to pair very nicely with former Oregon teammate Arik Armstead. They then added two new cornerbacks in the third and fourth rounds, Will Redmond and Rashard Robinson. They also traded back into the first round with the Chiefs to draft guard, Joshua Garnett, out of Stanford. This is a pick I was a fan of. IT stabilizes the offensive line along with Anthony Davis, who was reinstated last week after retiring before the age of twenty-six. These two will seriously help out their offensive line which needs a ton of help. The improved line will need to protect to quarterback, whoever that ends up being, Blaine Gabbert or Colin Kaepernick. Word out of their camp is that the race is tight
The case for Blaine Gabbert:
Blaine Gabbert is a bust now you try to spin it, but tat doesn't matter now. It doesn't matter how bad he was for the Jags. People seem to forget that he is that big of a bust, he kind of gets a free pass. I have an affinity for Gabbert. He was awesome in college and I like him for that. But he is not starting QB. He started all eight games he played in. Threw for around two thousand yards, ten touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He was also sacked twenty-five times, which is just plain embarrassing for the line in the eight games he played. I think we all know why they traded up for Garnett. It's crazy to think that he has played six NFL seasons, I fee like I've been watching him miserably try to play QB forever. But the fact of the matter is that he is a very bad QB, but he actually might get the starting job. He is the type of QB Chip Kelly has had in the NFL.
The case for Colin Kaepernick:
Kaep isn't much better but the key thing is here is that he is better. His stats are not that much better but he gives them the best chance to win, if that's what they want to do. He threw for sixteen-hundred yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions. If they were trying to beat Boise State, Chip would have to start him. But this isn't college ball.
Conclusion:
I think San Fran shouldn't be trying to win. They should be trying to lose to get a top five pick. They might not have to tank to get a top five pick they could play their best and get there. If they land a top five pick and end up with Clemson's Watson or Miami's Kaaya the season will be a success and he'd have his starting quarterback for awhile. Chip, start Gabbert and get yourself a quarterback next Spring.
